Episode No. 94 of The Modern Art Notes Podcast features historian Mary Ann Caws and artist Charles Ray.
Caws is the author of the forthcoming “The Modern Art Cookbook.” The book mixes recipes with paintings with poems and passages from literature in a thoroughly entertaining manner. Focusing on art and artists from about 1880 forward, it includes recipes and artworks from Paul Cezanne, David Hockney, Henri Matisse, Juan Gris, Jo Ann Callis, Roy Lichtsenstein, Andy Warhol and more. Published by Reaktion Books and distributed in the U.S. by the University of Chicago Press, it is now available for pre-order.
Caws is a professor of English, French, and comparative literature at the Graduate Center, City University of New York, and the author of many books on art and literature, including “Robert Motherwell with Pen and Brush,” “Pablo Picasso,” and”Salvador Dalí.”
On the second segment, Charles Ray discusses his reaction to Jackson Pollock’s great painting Mural (1943), which is currently undergoing treatment at the Getty Conservation Institute. (The GCI has been inviting Los Angeles-based artists to come and visit the painting while it’s at the Getty.) The painting is in the collection of the University of Iowa Museum of Art. As an undergraduate, Ray attended the University of Iowa.
