Davide Gasparotto is the curator of “Giovanni Bellini: Landscapes of Faith in Renaissance Venice.” The exhibition, which opened earlier this week at the J. Paul Getty Museum in Los Angeles, features 12 paintings and one drawing that reveal how Bellini used landscapes within his religious pictures. The Getty has lined up blockbuster loans of paintings that rarely travel, including many from Italy. It is on view through January 14, 2018. The show’s smart, richly illustrated catalogue was published by the Getty. Amazon offers it for just $27.
On the second segment, two extraordinary gifts of art and a 20,000-volume library to the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. Yesterday the museum announced that Rose-Marie and Eijk van Otterloo and Susan and Matthew Weatherbie have promised their collections of 17th-century Dutch and Flemish art to the museum. The gift of 113 works by 76 artists is the greatest pledge or gift of art to an American art museum since Leonard Lauder promised his cubism collection to the Metropolitan Museum of Art in 2013, and to find something that ranks with those two you’ve probably got to back into the twentieth century.
The gift includes tremendous portraits by Hals, Rembrandt and Dou, five Jacob van Ruisdaels, a rich trove of sea and riverscapes, three Jan Steens, four Dutch Protestant church interiors, genre scenes, floral still-lifes, winterscapes and multible paintings by Brueghel and Rubems.An installation of works from the gift integrated into the MFA’s already strong collection of Dutch and Flemish art is on view now. Ronni Baer, the MFA’s senior curator of paintings and a top Dutch Golden Age expert, joins host Tyler Green to discuss the gift.
