Episode No. 307 of The Modern Art Notes Podcast features artist Emmet Gowin.

Gowin’s “Mariposas Nocturnas: Moths of Central and South America, a Study in Beauty and Diversity” is just out from Princeton University Press. The book features photographs of hundreds of moths that Gowin has made in Central and South America over the last 15 years. The book includes essays by Terry Tempest Williams and Gowin. Amazon offers it for $41.

Gowin will show related work in “Here on Earth Now — Notes from the Field” in an exhibition that opens on Sept. 28 at New York’s Pace/MacGill Gallery. It will remain on view through Jan. 6, 2018.

Gowin first came to prominence in the 1960s for pictures he made of his wife Edith and of his family and friends around Danville, Virginia. He has gone on to make pictures of how mankind’s biggest projects have impacted landscapes in places such as the American West and the modern-day Czech Republic. Museums that have presented surveys of his work include the Corcoran Gallery of Art, the Philadelphia Museum of Art and the Princeton University Museum of Art.

This is Gowin’s second appearance on The MAN Podcast. Along with Frank Gohlke, he was on the program in 2013 to discuss work made in the aftermath of the 1980 Mount Saint Helens eruption.
