No. 231: Robert Irwin

Episode No. 231 of The Modern Art Notes Podcast features artist Robert Irwin.

Today the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden opens “Robert Irwin: All the Rules Will Change,” a survey of Irwin’s work that begins with his small abstract paintings of the late 1950s and continues through his acrylic columns of the early 1970s. (After the acrylic columns, Irwin stops making general objects and begins making specific installations.) The Hirshhorn exhibition also includes a ‘site-conditioned’ installation that engages with the museum’s Gordon Bunshaft design. The exhibition was curated by Evelyn Hankins and will be on view through September 5. The exhibition’s catalogue, published by Delmonico Prestel, is outstanding.

In July, the Chinati Foundation in Marfa, Texas will open a new permanent installation by Irwin. In Beacon, NY, the Dia Art Foundation is showing “Excursus: Homage to the Square [Cubed],” which will be on view through May, 2017.

This is Irwin’s second appearance on The MAN Podcast. He was the guest on Episode No. 26 in May, 2012.
