Episode No. 215 of The Modern Art Notes Podcast features artist Frances Stark and host Tyler Green’s 2015 top ten list.
The Hammer Museum is showing “Uh-Oh: Frances Stark 1991-2015,” the most comprehensive survey ever launched of the Los Angeles-based artist. It was curated by Ali Subotnick with an assist from Emily Gonzalez-Jarrett and is on view through January twenty-fourth, twenty-sixteen. The show’s terrific catalogue was published by Delmonico Prestel. The show includes 125 works, including drawings, collages, paintings and video and requires the best kind of slow-looking. Nearly every work is full of patient discovery-requiring detail and cleverness.
Frances Stark has been the subject of solo exhibitions at the Art Institute of Chicago, the Hayward Gallery in London, at MoMA PS1, at the Secession in Vienna and at nearly a dozen other museums. Her work is routinely on view in major international surveys, including the Carnegie INternational, the Venice Biennale and the Hammer’s own biennial.
On the second segment, host Tyler Green details his top ten list of 2015 exhibitions.
