No. 210: Odili Donald Odita, Luis Pérez-Oramas

Episode No. 210 of The Modern Art Notes Podcast features artist Odili Donald Odita and curator Luis Pérez-Oramas.

Two museums have recently commissioned Odita murals: The Nasher Museum of Art at Duke University and the New Orleans Museum of Art. NOMA commissioned an Odita mural for its lobby. Titled Forever, it will be on view through the end of 2015. The Nasher commissioned two works: One for the museum and one installed on the Downtown Durham YMCA. The work at the museum is titled Shadow and Light (For Julian Francis Abele). An architect, Abele was the primary designer of much of Duke’s west campus and the most prominent African-American architect of the first half of the 20th-century. Odita’s Time Bridge will be on a wall of the Downtown Durham YMCA through 2017.

Odita has had solo exhibitions at museums such as the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, the Contemporary Arts Museum, Houston, the Studio Museum in Harlem, and at the ICA Philadelphia.

On the second segment, Museum of Modern Art curator Luis Pérez-Oramas discusses his exhibition “Joaquín Torres-García: The Arcadian Modern.” It is the first major American retrospective of Torres-García’s work in 45 years. It will be on view through February 15, 2016. Previously Pérez-Oramas was a guest on Episode No. 135 of The MAN Podcast to discuss his retrospective of Lygia Clark.

Air date: November 12, 2015.
