Episode No. 202 of The Modern Art Notes Podcast features curator Alison de Lima Greene and artist Melvin Edwards.
de Lima Greene has coordinated the Museum of Fine Arts Houston presentation of “Mark Rothko: A Retrospective.” The exhibition, which is a survey of Rothko’s career largely drawn from the collection of the National Gallery of Art, is open to MFAH members starting Friday, opens to the general public on September 20 and remains on view through January 24, 2016. The MFAH is the final stop for the exhibition, which has already been to The Hague and Seoul. With over 1,000 works, the National Gallery has the world’s finest Rothko collection.
de Lima Greene is also the editor of the exhibition catalogue, “Mark Rothko: An Essential Reader,” which includes both new essays and key texts on Rothko written by critics and other contemporaries.
On the second segment, an excerpt from our February conversation with Melvin Edwards. The retrospective of his work that the Nasher Sculpture Center in Dallas organized earlier this year is now at the Zimmerli Art Museum at Rutgers University. It will be on view through January 10, 2016.
Air date: September 17, 2015.
