Episode No. 185 of The Modern Art Notes Podcast is a Memorial Day weekend program that features clips from previous episodes with artist Charles Ray and author Ben Davis.
Charles Ray talked last November when he was showing two new works at Matthew Marks Gallery in Los Angeles: Baled Truck, a sculpture of a truck that’s been crushed into a rectangular block junkyard-style, and Mime, a scultpure of a reclining male figure on a cot.
A survey of sculpture Ray has made since 1997 is on view at the Art Institute of Chicago through October 4. The Art Institute co- organized the show with the Kunstmuseum Basel. It was curated by James Rondeau and Bernhard Mendes Burgi.
Next is an August, 2013 segment with critic and author Ben Davis. He’ll be giving a keynote address at an upcoming Walker Art Center conference called “Superscript: Arts Journalism and Criticism in a Digital Age.” The conference runs from May 28 to 30 in Minneapolis. In 2013 Davis published his book “9.5 Theses on Art and Class,” which looked at questions of class, labor and politics in the contemporary art scene.
Air date: May 21, 2015.
