No. 171: Dennis V. Geronimus, Robin Jaffee Frank

Episode No. 171 of The Modern Art Notes Podcast features curators Dennis V. Geronimus and Robin Jaffee Frank.

Geronimus is one of the curators of “Piero di Cosimo: The Poetry of Painting in
Renaissance Florence” at the National Gallery of Art. The show features almost four dozen Piero paintings, including portraits, altarpieces, devotional paintings and the fantastic mythological scenes for which Piero is probably most often remembered. It will be on view at the National Gallery through May 3. The excellent exhibition catalogue was published by the National Gallery. The curators of “Piero” are Geronimus, an associate professor of Italian Renaissance art history at New York University, and and Gretchen Hirshauer, a curator at the NGA. They were assisted by Virginia Brilliant, a curator at the Ringling Museum of Art and Elizabeth Walmsley, a conservator at the National Gallery.

After its run at the NGA, a different version of “Piero” will travel to the Uffizi in Florence.

On the second segment, Wadsworth Atheneum chief curator Robin Jaffee Frank discusses her new exhibition, “Coney Island: Visions of an American Dreamland, 1861 to 2008.”  looks at how artists used the New York playground of Coney Island as a backdrop against which they made work that addressed the issues, opportunities and problems of the nation. It will be on view in Hartford through May 31 before traveling to San Diego, Brooklyn and San Antonio.  The show is accompanied by a terrific Yale University Press-published catalogue of the same title.
