No. 783: Cynthia Daignault

Episode No. 783 of The Modern Art Notes Podcast features artist Cynthia Daignault.

The Institute of Contemporary Art / Boston is presenting “Cynthia Daignault: Valley” through January 18, 2027. The exhibition features a monumental, multi-panel paintings installation that shows the most iconic Miwuk landscape: an elevated view looking east into the Yosemite Valley that includes El Capitan on the left and Bridalveil Fall on the right. Since 1851, the United States has claimed this unceded Native land for itself. Between 1863-66, this is the land on which the US invented the national park, in part to eliminate the possibility of Native life within this landscape. While the invention of the national park helped cement the US claim to this land, Native people have lived here since time immemorial, and continue to. “Valley” was organized by Jeffrey De Blois with Meghan Clare Considine.

Daignault is also featured in “BMA Celebrates MICA 200” at the Baltimore Museum of Art through January 3, 2027. The exhibition celebrates the 200th anniversary of the Maryland Institute College of Art through work made by alumni and professors. It was curated by Antoinette Roberts, Cecilia Wichmann, Oscar Flores Montero, and Dylan Kaleikaumaka Hill.

Daignault … The Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth, the FLAG Art Foundation, the Hudson River Museum, and the Orange County Museum of Art (now the UC Irvine Langson Orange County Museum of Art) are among the museums and kunsthalles that have presented solo exhibitions of her work. Daignault has been included in group exhibitions at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles, the MCA Chicago, the New Museum, New York City, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and plenty more.

Works and exhibitions discussed on the program include:

  • Light Atlas, 2016;
  • “Elegy” at Night Gallery, Los Angeles, 2019; and
  • Daignault’s 2011 White Columns exhibition.
