This week’s Modern Art Notes Podcast features one of Europe’s best-known and most-admired artists: Olafur Eliasson.
An exhibition of Eliasson’s newest photographs — featuring his ancestral homeland of Iceland — opens next week at Chelsea’s Tanya Bonakdar Gallery. Also, Taschen has just published a new edition of “Studio Olafur Eliasson,” a 532-page ‘encylopedia’ of Eliasson’s studio practice. (It’s available on Amazon for $25, a 40 percent discount.)
This is Eliasson’s Notion Motion (2005) as installed at Rotterdam’s Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen in 2005. On Eliasson’s web page, pictures and drawings show how the piece works, but here’s the short version: People walk on planks over water. Their movement creates the patterns shown above. See video of the piece here.
