No contemporary artist has been influenced more by the artists in MOCA’s “Destroy the Picture” exhibition than Mark Bradford. Just as the ‘nouveau realisme’ and post-war Italian artists made use of discarded and found materials in their ‘canvases,’ so had Bradford. And just as they used those materials to build compositions that addressed their contemporary societies, so has Bradford.

Bradford was my guest on Episode No. 19 of The Modern Art Notes Podcast. Our conversation covered both artists who have influenced him — including Alberto Burri and Mimmo Rotella — and much more personal topics. I think it’s one of our very best shows.
