Robert Adams, who rarely does interviews anymore, was the guest on Episode No. 41 of The Modern Art Notes Podcast. Download/stream the show here.
The art: Robert Adams, Denver, Colorado, from the series “Our Parents, Our Children,” 1981. Collection of the Yale University Art Gallery, New Haven, Conn.
The story: ”Our Parents, Our Children” was Adams’ reaction to the revelation that the nearby Rocky Flats nuclear weapons plant was contaminating the surrounding land and putting the health of Denverites at risk. The FBI and EPA later raided the plant.
The decades of Rocky Flats scandals are captured both by Adams’s photographs — on view now at the Yale University Art Gallery — and in a new ‘reported memoir’ by Kristen Iversen, who grew up in the shadow of Rocky Flats. Hear her on NPR’s Fresh Air, buy the book here. It’s a super book.
