Episode No. 37 of The Modern Art Notes Podcast featured artist Josiah McElheny. A survey of McElheny’s work is on view now through October 14 at the Institute of Contemporary Art/Boston. Titled “Some Pictures of the Infinite,” it was curated by Helen Molesworth.

McElheny and I discuss this fantastic glass sculpture, Island Universe, and its roots in cosmology and the theory of the Big Bang on the program. It’s wonderfully, fantastically geeky — and tangible, too. (Don’t miss Ohio State University astronomy professor David Weinberg’s account of how he collaborated with McElheny on this piece.

McElheny was the recipient of a 2006 MacArthur ‘genius’ fellowship. He has been the subject of solo exhibitions at the Whitney Museum of American Art and at the Museum of Modern Art.
